Growing Together: The Journey of Our Farmers Market and Celebrating National Fruits & Veggies Month

As we welcome the cooler breeze of fall and the vibrant colors of changing leaves, our farmers market is in full bloom, embarking on an exciting journey to nurture both the community and its connection to fresh, healthy food. This September, as part of National Fruits & Veggies Month, we’re not just celebrating the bounty of nature—we’re celebrating the growth of a local gem: the East Capitol Farmers Market.

After the success of our Cleveland VA market, we took on a new challenge—partnering with East Capitol Urban Farm to develop and grow a vibrant, bi-weekly market right in the heart of Washington, DC. While Cleveland and East Capitol DC may seem worlds apart—one a rural town, the other an urban neighborhood—they share a common struggle: a lack of access to fresh, healthy food and community-centered events. And that’s where we come in.

The East Capitol Farmers Market, held every other Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM at 5929 East Capitol Street SE, is more than just a market—it’s an extension of the three-acre East Capitol Urban Farm. The East Capitol Farmers Market is part of a larger vision led by the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). The farm itself is a multifaceted urban oasis, complete with community garden beds, an aquaponics system, walking trails, art installations, and even a play space for children. Nestled right across from the Capitol Heights Metro Station, it serves as a vital food hub in Ward 7, tackling the food security challenges we face as our climate changes.

But while the location is unique—an urban farm in the middle of a bustling city—it comes with its own challenges. Foot traffic has been a hurdle, and we know that in order to draw more vendors and visitors, we need to raise awareness and create an inviting, dynamic space. That’s why our partnership with CAUSES and The East Capitol Urban Farm is so important. Together, we’re working to increase the visibility of the market, enhance vendor participation, and make East Capitol the go-to spot for fresh produce, artisanal goods, and community connection.

Why visit us this fall?

Did you know September is National Fruits & Veggies Month? It’s the perfect time to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables—grown right here in your city! On September 21st and every other Saturday, you can explore an array of seasonal produce, local crafts, and delicious foods, all while supporting your community.

As we transition into fall, the cooler weather invites us to spend more time outdoors. It’s the ideal moment to stroll through the urban farm, enjoy the green surroundings, and engage with the passionate vendors who bring their best to each market. Whether it’s Tammie’s engaging flower and herb walks or discovering new treats from our local artisans, every market day is an opportunity to connect, explore, and celebrate the season.

What’s on the horizon?

We’re working diligently behind the scenes to make the market an even better experience for vendors and visitors alike. In partnership with CAUSES, we are working to enhance the infrastructure of the market to make it a more inviting and comfortable space. With improved signage, traffic management, and ongoing collaborations with local groups, we’re setting the stage for the market to become a thriving hub of activity. Our infrastructure plans include enhanced seating, lighting, and shaded areas for more comfort, as well as new spaces for outdoor cooking demonstrations. And, of course, we’re continuing to create spaces for the whole community to come together—whether that’s through a quick market stop or a leisurely day exploring the farm.

So, as fall begins to unfold, we invite you to be part of our journey. Visit the East Capitol Farmers Market, pick up fresh produce, meet your neighbors, and experience how a small market can grow into something truly special. Together, we’re cultivating a healthier, stronger community—one market day at a time.
